On the Road in Australia: Where to stop along Victoria’s coast

Wilson's Prom.

A month ago, I went on a 5-day road trip along the coast of the state of Victoria, Australia. With a coastline as extensive as this, it is not at all surprising that Victoria is home to countless beautiful beaches, lakes and coastal towns. Here is a brief description of the places that are not to be missed, along with a couple of recommendations of places I wish I had time to fit in.

The 12 Apostles, The Great Ocean Road

The 12 Apostles is a collection of limestone rock islands, with some of them as high as 45 meters high. The Great Ocean Road’s most famous stop is just a fraction of the utter scale and beauty of this scenic highway, which is 243 kilometers long! Despite there being only eight of them left (sorry to disappoint you there!), the 12 Apostles on a sunny day is a wonderful sight to behold.

Drive 299 kilometers east from the 12 Apostles, and you will reach the cute coastal town of Mornington. The beaches, painted beach huts and lookouts are all lovely sights.

Phillip Island

Phillip Island

In my opinion, Phillip Island is one of Victoria’s prettiest places. The views and their sunsets are spectacular! Not only that, but Phillip Island is home to a collection of brilliant beach towns. We stopped at Cowes and it was lovely!

Okay, I have a confession to make. I didn’t get to stop by Wilsons Prom during this particular trip. However, it is along the route we took to Lakes Entrance, our last stop. As I visited this amazing site before, here are some photos of the beautiful Wilsons Promontory National Park, one of my favourite sites.

Lakes Entrance is home to the gorgeous Gippsland Lakes. Apart from being a stunning coastal town, you can even have the chance to see kangaroos, pelicans and dolphins!

The ones that got away: Torquay and Lorne

Having only stopped at the former during the night, Torquay and Lorne were the ones that got away. Located 150 kilometres east from the 12 Apostles, Torquay is known for surf beaches such as Bells Beach. Lorne Beach is another popular surfing spot. In Lorne, I would recommend Teddy’s Lookout, which has wonderful views of St. George’s River and that amazing coastline I keep on going on about!

I only have just over two months left in Australia, and it has been one heck of a ride. Trips like these really help one make the most of it – apart from making you realise just how massive Australia is!
