Geowulf play with 60s pop hooks in “He’s 31”

On the 8th July, Australian London-based duo Geowulf released the heartfelt and bright “He’s 31” from their upcoming 2nd album, My Resignation. If you like songs about sadness laced with 60’s pop hooks, then you’re in luck!

“He’s 31” explores a woman’s struggles over her troublesome relationship, and predominately, the disappointment she feels towards her significant other. “When writing it I felt very raw and upset” Geowulf front woman Star Kendrick admits. The song begins on a rather solemn note with tranquil guitar notes, paired with lyrics like “he’s all fucked up and 31” in the first verse and “it’s hard to even see love” in the second. However, as the track progresses, the emergence of brighter guitar riffs and pop hooks gives the subject matter some hope and a chance for release. We then hear the introduction of classic rhythms and demeanor of 60’s girl groups like The Crystals, The Ronettes and The Marvelettes. The insight they gave into the female experience of relationships with their tight melodies and harmonic vocals is reworked wonderfully in “He’s 31” with the modern touches. In sum, Geowulf’s new single is wonderfully bittersweet, leading to a great combination of bright music and despairing lyrics.

My Resignation is scheduled for release on the 25th October.
