Face to Face: An interview with Sonic Break
Sonic Break are an alternative rock band from Vancouver, Canada. Led by brothers Rory (vocals, lead guitar) and Jamie Mackay (vocals, rhythm guitar), alongside Ryan Grohn (drums) and Ashish Shenoy (backing vocals, bass guitar), this quartet have an exhilerating brand of edgy rock weaved with pop sensibilities. And this translates wonderfully into anthemic choruses and soaring rhythms. This is illustrated wonderfully in their new single ‘Spaceman’, a hopeful and life-affirming track for not letting setbacks stop you from following your dreams. Produced by Canadian music producer Darren Grahn (Metallica, Bon Jovi and Motley Crue), it is also their first offering from Is This An Intervention? – their forthcoming debut EP.
I got to catch up with Sonic Break earlier this week to chat about ‘Spaceman’, the music they love, dream festival line-ups and alternative realities.
So tell me about your great new single ‘Spaceman’ – what inspired you to write it?
We were making a conscious effort to write music designed to make the listener feel good, and as soon as that first guitar riff hit, we immediately knew we had something special. ‘Spaceman’ is about that person you know in your life, who is bursting with potential, yet has been struggling. It is an upbeat and hopeful song that chronicles that person’s refusal to let failure stand in the way of their dreams and the inspiration that everyone around them experiences in the event of their ultimate meteoric rise.
Your music is a great mix of edgy rock and accessible pop melodies. Who are your strongest rock influences?
The Black Keys, Jack White, Muse, Mumford and Sons, Queens of The Stone Age, and grunge bands form the 90s – Nirvana!
Outside of the sphere of alternative rock and indie, what music do you love to listen to?
We are fans of classic rock, pop rock, and even catchy R&B. Led Zeppelin, Imagine Dragons, and Post Malone come to mind.
Is there any music from the UK you are particularly enjoying right now?
We are huge fans of Royal Blood, Jake Bugg, and Jade Bird. I’ve seen all 3 of them live when they’ve come through Vancouver.
You have great music taste! What was your avourite album from 2019?
We loved Let’s Rock by The Black Keys and Feral Roots by Rival Sons!
If you could be anyone famous for a day, who would it be?
Paul McCartney. I’d spend the day writing songs!!
What would be your dream festival line-up? Please choose 3 headliners.
