Hello everyone, Sophia here!
I am from London and study a BA in Classical Civilisation at the University of Warwick. I am 21 years old and this is my blog.
Music, Film and TV are my passions, and they really make me tick. Per the wise words of John Keating in Dead Poets Society: “Poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for” and these can be found in abundance in the Arts.
My love for Film, TV and above all, Music, has gone on for as long as I can remember. Receiving the firm stamp of a music taste from my parents, I remember making tapes and CDs with selections of 70’s, 80s and 90s music (The Smiths, The Ramones, Buzzcocks and The Jam comes to mind from my first CD) between the ages of 8 and 13 (okay, I admit there was also some R&B and cheesy pop in there too!). I am also part of a family who would sit down every weekend and watch the re-runs of the retro 007 Bond films from the first to the last, only to do it again once they started showing the Sean Connery ones again; Roger Moore is a family favourite so when his films are on telly, these viewings become sacred.
During my first year at university (while making full use of my student loan, may I add!), I discovered a wonderful market stall in Coventry’s city centre selling vinyl of artists I love, as well an abundance of film soundtracks I adore. I have been guilty of dragging a couple of loved ones there numerous times, compelled to watch me get carried away. At the end of each academic term, I would collect all the vinyl I bought that term and take it back to my parents so I could listen to them with Dad in the evenings, and it was especially wonderful during Christmas, when we spent most of the day listening to vinyl!
Then, I found another way to annoy my close friends and family with my musical endeavours during my second year at Warwick – I joined the student radio station, RaW, and presented a weekly throwback music show called Turn Back Time (cue the diva that is Cher!), which covered anything from popular 90s music, Disco, to slightly more obscure Punk and Electronic collections from the late 70’s and early 80s. Podcasts of these shows can also be found on this site.
I then spent an exchange year in Melbourne, Australia. Here, the Arts kept me warmly connected to home, family and friends back in the UK. It was here where I started From Sophia with Love. In essence, it is my platform to write about what makes me tick! This blog will contain a vibrant blend of topics on not only new content, but also revisit the Music, Film and Television of old (or as I like to say “our comfy favourites”, e.g. what our parents call the stuff of the “good old days”). Spanning from the classics, the popular and downright obscure, I hope you all get a kick out of reading about the art and popular culture you love, or possibly even receive recommendations to enable you to discover something new. Post after post, I shall write with the same motive: to share not only the glistening works I come across during my day, but also the gems very close to my heart, giving them the admiration and attention they deserve.
As the immortal words of Wet Wet Wet proclaim, “Love is all Around”, so come on and let it show! I sincerely hope you enjoy reading. 🙂
From Sophia, with Love x
