Tegan and Sara throwback to their teens in “I’ll Be Back Someday”
Three years ago, Canadian pop twins Tegan and Sara released Love You To Death – their eighth album. The year is now 2019 and the duo are preparing for the release of their ninth, named Hey, I’m Just Like You. This album will include re-recorded tracks the twins wrote during their teenage years. To announce the news of this exciting project, they released its lead single – the catchy “I’ll Be Back Someday”.
This track is a warm throwback to their teenage years and the punk-centred music they used to write. Sara has spoken about the twins’ first tastes of writing guitar music: “”We had been begging for an electric guitar, and on our 16th birthday, we got one. Of course, we had to share it, so it became a weapon that we stole from each other’s rooms, barricading ourselves behind locked doors with guitar in hand. Screaming over the small amplifier, we tested our voices by writing punk songs, shredding our thumbs on the strings.”
After experiencing fame as a pop duo, it is lovely to see Tegan and Sara revisiting their first moments of rock and punk experimentation. Yet, it is not a complete departure. The stronger focus on guitar riffs and the introduction of teenage angst is still complemented nicely with addictive pop hooks. Therefore, by combining both earlier sounds and warmly-received pop hooks, “I’ll Be Back Someday” has become informed and nostalgic yet still fresh.
The band’s ninth album release will nicely coincide with the release of Tegan and Sara’s new memoir High School. Hey, I’m Just Like You will be out on the 27th September.
