Clairo explores a new love in “Sofia”
Earlier this year, indie pop artist Clairo (aka Claire Cottrill) announced news of her debut album Immunity. After releasing great singles such as “Bags” and “Closer to You”, Clairo has now dropped her final single from the album – the sweet “Sofia”.
Clairo has revealed how the track explores the thrills around a budding relationship. “Sofia is a song about my sexuality and about having a relationship with another woman” revealed the 20-year-old artist. The track’s name is also inspired by some of her teenage celebrity crushes, such as Sofia Coppola and Sofia Vergara. In “Sofia”, both emotions of euphoria and fear experienced at the start of a relationship mingle beautifully. Within the track, the profound feelings of wishing for one person to save you are then paired with the very real exploration of societal pressures. Vocally, Clairo manages to be both sweet and direct. It is clear that she won’t let expectations get in the way of her new and exciting relationship, but it is noted that they play on her mind.
In terms of those involved in the production of the track, we have a brilliant ensemble. Danielle Haim contributed to the fuzzy guitar riffs and drum rhythms of the track, while the production of ex-Vampire Weekend keyboardist Rostam adds new depths to Clairo’s vocals along with the dreamy addition of the synths. Therefore, what we get with “Sofia” is a well-rounded and glossy indie pop track.
Immunity is out on the 2nd August.
