Sleater-Kinney unveil LP ‘The Center Won’t Hold’
With it being four years since their last album, Washington rockers Sleater-Kinney have released their tenth album The Center Won’t Hold. Produced by St. Vincent, the record sees the band experimenting with synth-pop. Not only that, but the new record could possibly be the last we hear of drummer Janet Weiss, who recently announced her departure from the band.
Since they emerged from the Washington punk and independent rock scene in the mid-ninties, Sleater-Kinney have stayed fierce. This can be heard more than ever on their tenth LP, which sees them fighting back against expectations. “The alchemy of this band is just not something that coheres around subtlety or quietness” said Carrie Brownstein. “I think on this record, it’s our tenth record, and we are conscious of the fact that there’s not a lot of precedent for continuing to make music as you age. Particularly for an all-female band. There are not a lot of contemporaries who have made this many records. We don’t want to go quietly into the night.” Thus, it is lovely to see the band being as multi-faceted and unashamedly themselves as they can be. This makes The Center Won’t Hold a lovely listen.
While we already possessed the singles “Hurry On Home,” “Can I Go On,” and “The Center Won’t Hold’, the release of the new album also provided other great tunes. One of these is the synth-pop delight ‘LOVE’ – Brownstein’s ode to friendship and band’s very members. “The first two verses are definitely a love letter to Corin and the band, and the processes of friendship, collaboration, and platonic love” Brownstein revealed about the track. We also have a playful and body-positive music video to match the good vibes, which consists of photos from many fans. Check it out below!
