Poppy unveils frantic metal-pop in ‘Concrete’

Poppy has been making a name for herself with her wonderful meshing of metal and pop. This vibe is its strongest in her brand new single – the frantic ‘Concrete’. The single, which the artist released after signing to Summerian Records, is the first taste of her third LP. The release has also coincided with her performance at Reading & Leeds last weekend, where she played alongside Twenty One Pilots, The 1975 and You Me At Six.

Co-written with Titanic Sinclair, Chris Greatti and Zakk Cervini, Poppy beautifully incorporates elements of thrash metal and bubblegum pop with a dark outlook. Also, the new single sees the artist wishing to be buried six feet under, covered in concrete and turned into a street. Additionally, through the frantic rhythms of ‘Concrete’, Poppy furthers her musical persona through her yearning of “young blood”.

Musically, ‘Concrete’ may be Poppy’s tightest and most captivating mix of the two genres. With previous explorations heard in ‘Play Destroy’ (her collaboration with Grimes), ‘X’ and her chaotic Fever 333 collab ‘Scary Mask’, ‘Concrete’ seems to be a more polished and open product of these experiments. It constantly fluctuates from extremes, seeing Poppy go from whispering to letting out a full metal fury, only to then return to a sweet-as-candy pop demeanor. Thus, ‘Concrete’ is an undeniably frantic yet admirably unique track.
